What is the GP Gastropak.

The Gastropak is a medical kit costing £39.00 designed to assist in the treatment of Traveller’s Diarrhea (and to provide a cure for diarrhea), usually caused by a bacterial infection. The Gastropak contains a range of medications and items for use, depending on the level of severity of the symptoms.

The Gastropak consists of sachets of rehydration salts, tablets of an anti-diarrheal medication (loperamide), tablets of an antibiotic (Ciprofloxacin), tablets of nausea / vomiting medication (Buccastem), water purifying tablets and wet wipes. The contents are separately labelled as items A – F.

The Gastropak is designed to serve one person who may suffer different levels of severity of symptoms. The water purifying tablets are supplied so that the sufferer has a clean supply of water while tackling the infection.

 

Should I buy a Gastropak ?

Many of us travel extensively or regularly to different parts of the world these days. We take adventurous holidays in remote areas, make business trips to less sanitised locations than our constitutions are used to, or just find ourselves passing through such places.

There is therefore a greater likelihood of visiting less developed or isolated parts of the world with no convenient or trusted medical facilities. And there is nothing worse than having to try to deal with – or even just try to track down - unfamiliar medical services, probably in a foreign language, when you are already feeling unwell.

The Gastropak gives you explanatory advice prior to your trip, the ability to prepare practically for the possibility of getting Traveller’s Diarrhea while away and confidence that you have appropriate medical supplies with you before you start your travels. It is designed so that, if taken in accordance with the instructions supplied, it helps you make a quick recovery from that infection and thus can again fully participate in your holiday or business trip. (Note that vomiting is not a symptom of Traveller’s Diarrhea and it will not therefore be relieved by taking the medications in the Gastropak.)

Who is the Gastropak for?

The Gastropak is designed for use by an adult, or child who is 11 or over, and who is suffering from the symptoms of bacterial diarrhea (usually referred to as Traveller’s Diarrhea) but who does not have other medical facilities or assistance available.

Why do you need to register first on the Gastropak site?

The medication Ciprofloxacin in the Gastropak normally requires a prescription under UK legislation before being supplied. Gastropak must therefore keep a record of the people who have purchased the pack so that they are contactable by the UK’s Care Quality Commission (CQC), should that body wish to check that the pack has been supplied in accordance with its medical guidelines governing the sale of prescription drugs on-line. If you are buying for other family members or travel group they must all fill in the questionnaire. If anyone answers with a negative they must fill in an individual separate questionnaire.

Gastropak is registered with the Care Quality Commission and we follow CQC guidelines so as to ensure that our customers are properly protected.

Why do you need to file in a Prescription details form?

The CQC medical guidelines require that you supply the details requested on the form and are made aware of certain terms and conditions relating to the purchase of medications on-line. We have a medical practitioner check your completed Prescription form before your purchase is dispatched.
